sketchytimes [Jan. 30th, 2012|12:38 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I've taken inspiration from (or rather, nicked the idea from!) the lovely Naomi, and decided to use photos of friends and acquaintances as reference for some of my sketches. I often use my own face as a sort of template for my characters, or rather, my idea of my face, simply because I kind of know what I look like (sometimes my idea differs) and, well, my face is with me all the time. Anyway, I really need to practice drawing other noses and other teeth and other hair. All my friends are so beautiful and wonderful looking, and I don't know why I haven't done this before!

If any of you particularly want me to draw you, just drop me a comment - that goes for anyone who reads this; I don't have to already know you! It may not turn out to be an exact likeness, but hopefully the sketches will be vaguely recognisable as real people!

Oh, and most of you will be turned into fantastical beings of course.

This is the beautiful, ethereal Natalee May.
(Please excuse the terrible photo; I still haven't got my camera back, & I don't own a scanner)

Volunteering for the RSPB [Jan. 18th, 2012|01:00 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , , , , ]

I've just been accepted as a volunteer Education Assistant up at Leighton Moss, my local RSPB reserve! Yaaaay!! Which basically means I get to hang out in really beautiful countryside, helping to teach young children about nature, and (hopefully) get them excited about conservation. Even if one child develops an interest in wildlife, then it's worth it. Also, I've more chance of getting a job there eventually if I'm already volunteering, hehe! Though I'd honestly do it for free, is SO beautiful there. Volunteering will be fun all year round, but Summer will be amazing! My absolute favourite activity when I was little was pond dipping, and they've got a special wildlife pond just for that! I think I may have more fun than most of the kids!

I had to fill in a million forms, and planned to go back up to the reserve today, but didn't have time in the end because I got a suprise last-minute interview at a farm near Garstang, to be a sort of all-round general employee; cafe & shop work, feeding the animals, and helping with kids parties are some of the things that I'll be doing if I get the job. Anyway, I find out on Friday. The interview went pretty well, but I'm not getting my hopes up - most places are put off by me not being very flexible about work days due to dog grooming on Wednesdays and Fridays. And I've very little experience working with children. But we'll see! :)

I did go for a stroll round Williamson Park this afternoon/evening ('prevening' as Sheldon would say! :D) and took some photos, a few of which you'll see below. The last few days have been beautifully clear and crisp, and despite the freezing temperatures, it's my favourite type of weather. Perfect for photos!

A portrait of Guinness and Tia, two huuuuge Malamutes (both of whom fell out of a car boot in excitement onto me the other week!) belonging to the owner of the dog grooming parlour I'm training at! Anyway, she loved it, so it's going in the window of the shop along with a sign advertising 'pet portraits by local artist', hee! :D

Please excuse the rubbish iPhone photo - I had to pawn my proper camera to pay the rent :(
It looks loooads better in real life, much deeper colours n' all that... I will get a proper scan of it eventually, but you get the idea!

If you, or anyone you know, wants a pet portrait, I'm very reasonable in my pricing! (And will probably give you discount if you know me already! ;) )

Chris Packham's 'A Wild Life Exposed' [Dec. 30th, 2011|06:25 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

I met one of my idols the other week! Chris Packham; conservationist and wildlife photographer - he basically has my dream job, dammit! Anyway, after a whole day of sitting behind my stall at the Festive & Vintage Market (made £50 - could've been worse, I suppose) I bundled my stuff together, and rushed off to the train station to catch the train to Morecambe to see his talk. Despite the train being delayed by half an hour (typical!) and gale-force winds against me the whole way, I made it 15 minutes before the start. It was packed, but oddly enough, my favourite seat for talks & gigs - on the left, third row back, third seat in - was still available. Seating was first come first served, and there were several hundred people already there, yet 'my' seat was still there? Weird. But good.

ANYWAY. He talked a bit about his photography, and a lot about conservation, and was generally all-round dreeeeamy! I decided I had to be brave and talk to him afterwards, and I was telling him that I'd always wanted to do a science degree in Wildlife Conservation rather than the art degree I've got, and he said he'd always wanted to do an art degree!

I even got a photo with him! :D

SO DREEEEAMY! Haha!

I had to ask some old guy to take the photo, but he wasn't very good, hence the blurriness. He chopped our heads off the first time. I've cropped it & tried to save it in Photoshop. OH OH! But the best bit was that we both reached to adjust the angle of the camera in an annoyed way at exactly the same time! Haaa!! :D

*heart-eyes forever*

Ouch, climbed up the 5-foot side of the boat with no trouble, but then pulled a muscle in my shoulder trying to turn the key in a rusty padlock on the boat door! FAIL.

So, as most of you will have seen either on Facebook or Flickr, my boat has arrived at long last!! :D It was due to arrive on the Monday, but there was a delay and the truck drivers had to stay overnight at a service station, which meant I had to go back to the marina the next morning at 7am! Ugh! It was a horrible drizzly and misty morning, and I had a minor panic attack that I was making a huge mistake. Everything went smoothly, but I didn't even go in the boat that day; I just wanted to go home, and I didn't sleep for two days with worry. But ANYWAY, as it was gorgeous and sunny today, I went back and actually went inside the boat to inspect the damage from the journey. Everything had fallen over and a tub of bitumin had leaked all over the floor, but despite the mess, I could see that I was being totally irrational the other day, and now I'm REALLY excited again!! :D

Enough rambling, have some boot phoots!

</a>

And this one was taken today by my neighbour who wanted to see the boat, and who I scrounged a lift off, woo!

And this is the song I've been quoting all week.

Many many photos. Just taking pictures in and around my house while I'm still here, because I have no idea how soon I'll have to leave.

I'm pretty excited/terrified about tomorrow, as I've not seen the boat for 6 months, and somehow I've managed to convince myself that I've been tricked into buying a toy boat, or perhaps a model of the actual boat I viewed. Insane! I've also been having nightmares about the boat not being 'real' for example being made from balsa wood, or plastic, or being an inflatable boat. I've also dreamt it was a boat costume (WTF, brain?), and also had several nightmares about it sinking. Because of all this ridiculous stress, I haven't really slept for half a year, and I don't actually know how I'll react tomorrow. I don't even know if this was a good idea in the first place.. we shall see tomorrow.

(not a music video, but an amazing song.)

I'm feeling very stressed and very anxious, and a bit sad. I'm just about keeping sane by looking at lovely pictures of homes & houses. I have so many ideas for my boat, when it's finally ready to be lived on. Speaking of which, it's arriving on Monday!! After weeks and weeks of it being delayed, I've finally managed to get everything organised. It should've been here in January, but whatevs.

twenty five.

You know when you hear a song that reaches out and grabs your soul? It doesn't happen very often, but I think it's one of my favourite feelings in the world. I heard this song for the first time today, and it is THE most beautiful song I've heard in a long time. It's sung from the point of view of the bear/s that killed grizzly man Timothy Treadwell. Please listen! Jenny Hval is unearthly.

I'm sorrrrrryyyy that I haven't replied to things. I had a bit of a meltdown of sorts a week or so back (thank you Leroy and Elfy for talking some sense into me!), and haven't got round to replying all the things before that. But I will! I shall also catch up with my FL asap. Dearest new friends that have started following me in the last few weeks; I am usually on LJ more than this! And shall be again!

Now that it's likely I'll be staying around here for considerably longer than I planned, I'm going to make some flyers I can put through people's letterboxes offering dog walking and dog sitting services, and possibly business cards that I can hand out to people with dogs when I'm out walking. Is that too weird? I expect most regular dog walkers round here have seen me out and about with my camera, and many stop to chat (well, mostly because their dogs have run over to see what I'm doing - dogs seem to gravitate towards me, not that I mind at all!) so it's not too weird I guess.

Went to see the Moomin exhibition at Bury Art Gallery yesterday!! Ahh, it was wonderful! There were around 60 illustrations by Tove Jansson on display, and it was amazing seeing her actual original work in person.. siiiigh, I'm awed and inspired and now I'm all wistful!

After that, I decided to get my lip pierced! Yay! :D

Finally, have a long portrait. I'm going to try and do one every week, but it might get too boring, so I'll have to see!

Blah, I'll write something substantial another time. The internet never works when I actually feel like typing.

Ooh, one boat related development though; I'll be staying in Garstang for a while after all, simply because it'll be easier to work on the boat if it's nearby, rather than having to travel every day. I've found a spot on the hardstanding at Garstang Marina. It looks pretty nice! And to be honest, I'll sleep a lot better with the boat out of the water - until I'm actually living on it, I'll only worry constantly that I'll arrive one day and it's sunk! Ridiculous, but I keep having nightmares about it!
Anyway, almost everything's sorted, and I'm sending a cheque to complete the payment tomorrow. Eep!

Can anyone else smell when the wind changes, or is it just my weirdly sensitive nose again?

I'm not doing anything for new year's eve, even though it's more important to me than Christmas ever has been. I know time is a man-made concept and totally relative, (don't worry, I'm not going to get overly philosophical on you; I'm too tired) but a new year encourages me to let go of all my regrets and bad memories of the past year. I suppose that's normal, though.

I'm thinking of doing a taxidermy course in the new year, as I have a freezer full of dead things that I don't want to ruin with lack of knowledge & practice. I'm also going to go to all the nearby bird and animal sanctuaries and ask what happens to things that die, and if there are no rules and regulations for a particular species, if it's possible for me to have the bodies to work on. In a respectful way, of course. Not like the abominations seen in [info]wtf_taxidermy . (Although I do like tasteful & well made things like this - though taste is subjective I suppose! ;) ) I think doing some sort of official course will help to assure them that I'm not just a weirdo, too.

Getting impatient for my boat! Things should start moving again once the holidays are over. Torn between living on the Bridgewater Canal (in Cheshire) and the Rochdale Canal (which runs through Manchester and Hebden Bridge; two of my favourite places.) The advantage of living in Cheshire is that apparently there are plenty of jobs there, with it being a fairly wealthy county. I was planning on 2011 being a 'saving up' year, before trying to go completely self-sufficient. I mean, it doesn't matter really, as I can move between both canals, but I don't know how long it will take me to get the engine installed, so I probably should be prepared to be stuck in one place for a while. Ho hum.

Merry Yule everyone! Whether you celebrate anything or not, I hope you're all at least happy that the shortest day is over, and are looking forward to a weekend of good food with people you care about. Either that, or being a hermit all weekend and watching box sets of un-christmassy things like Star Trek or Futurama, whilst eating all the excess lebkuchen. I'm torn between the two to be honest.

Finally finished sorting presents; below are just a few of the things I made, including a ton of lebkuchen, a bowtie for Toby (which doubles as a belt or headband for me, because his neck is so huge!), pretties to go on Tilly's and Lottie's collars, and a dozen jars of apple & cranberry chutney.

the cancer spread and ran into her body and her blood, and there's nothing you can do about it now ♫ [Dec. 21st, 2010|05:27 pm]

It feels really good to have made the majority of my presents this year! It's cheaper than buying big fancy presents, but also seems much more personal. Nothing wrong with buying presents of course, but as I send presents to people throughout the year whenever I feel like it, I tend to get annoyed by the expectation of everyoneneedingpresentsallatonce. Making presents takes most of that annoyance away, and it gets me feeling creative again, which is always a bonus! In just a month, I think I've made up for a very uncreative year. I work well under pressure, haa. I forgot how much I like sewing, and I'm determined to keep that feeling! When I'm at my best, I'lll see something; decide to make it; make it; and tadaa! New dress/jewellery/hat/socks in very little time at all. But at my worst, nothing goes the way I want it, which is what has been happening for most of this year. Oh well, new start this coming year, eh? In many many ways!

Anyhoo, photos in the new year, when everyone's seen their presents. Just in case any of them stumble across this blog, which is unlikely, but you never know. I actually had little handmade presents for a few of you lot too, but I think they will end up being Anytime Presents™ instead. It's more fun that way anyway :P

I had a really disturbing dream about reptilian aliens (probably from watching V: The New Series last night) taking over the earth. It's pretty disjointed, and a lot more to it than what I'll write. The earth had been turned into several gigantic arenas surrounded by high walls, and only a few elite humans survived the aliens' tasks and tests, whose 'prize' was to be sold as slaves rather than killed. There was a lot of fallen rock and stereotypical falling pillars! And a lot of confusion and desperation, obviously. I thought it incredibly clever of the aliens to force humans to wipe themselves out for the 'reward' of slavery rather than death, while they sat back and watched in amusement. The helplessness I felt when thinking of older relatives (who obviously would be the first to go) was horrific though. One of the tests was a racetrack through desert, tundra, forests and other terrain round which humans were pursued by whatever was their greatest fear. Not dying of fright was the objective! I also remember something about having to know a combination of 5 numbers that was individual to oneself, but not having any clues as to what they meant, and therefore no way of knowing where to start looking for them.
The alien queen sat in the midst of all the chaos, looking beautiful and smug and eerie (evidently my brain nicked that bit straight out of V: XD) and smiting the occasional human for being rubbish.

It was actually really scary, and now I'm a bit paranoid that that is the reality, and being awake writing in my LJ right now isn't. I've totally confused myself. I have enough doubts about reality as it is, without these dreams unnerving me further!

~

Hahahaaa!! I just heard Khan's voice! She did a tiny sneeze that sounded like this: "a-pfeff!"
I'm sure anyone who has animals will know what I mean by voice.. it's not their bark or meow, but their actual speaking voice. I can hear Toby's voice when he's doing his excited seal impression, and sometimes when he yawns or grumbles. I really should video it someday!

~

Oh, and OH GOD how beautiful and perfect was the snow on Saturday? It was proper powdery, glittery, silent snow. I can't even begin to describe how it makes me feel! Naturally, the next day I went out for a photoshoot (I was tempted to go that evening, but I don't think I'd be alive!!) and I hope you like these photos, because I got frostbite for these!! Well, frostnip. I couldn't feel two of my fingertips for three days! I'm not completely happy with the photos, but I can't quite work out why. I think it might be that I didn't get many full body shots, as my tripod is broken and all I had was a brittle, snowy twig to balance my camera on! Should've asked for a Gorillapod for Christmas. Damn.

Still SO COLD. But very pretty out, so I shall forgive the weather this time.

Stayed at my parents' over the weekend, and baked lebkuchen, yay! (I'm just about to start another huge batch at home now!) They're so wonderfully wintery and spicey and lovely. And addictive. Took Mr Stinkleton on the park too; he loves the snow and ice, but always ends up running too fast on the ice and spraining something, silly billy. And as always, he has to be comforted when he has a 'hurty leg' (which is the phrase he understands!) so my step sister read him some trashy sci fi. (See pics below! He's actually looking at the book! I swear he understands human talk.)

Then we all went to Manchester to take Lauren back to her house, where we got to meet her huuuuge monster rabbit, Agent Harvey Cooper. I swear he's some kind of mutant!

It was really foggy on the way back, and I was a little disappointed that I couldn't be out doing pretentious photoshoots! :(

On a random note, I still REALLY want to go to Iceland. Sigh. (The country, not the shop.)
